New WMS assistant principal feels right at home

A smiling family of four sits close together by a lake, surrounded by green plants. The parents hold their young daughter and son, who are both dressed in white shirts and jeans.

For Alexa Michaels, Winona is home.

It’s where she went to college at Winona State University. It’s where she met her husband, Kody. It’s where they are raising their children, Kaden and Althea.

And now, starting this school year, it’s where she will make a difference in the lives of students in Winona Area Public Schools as the new assistant principal at Winona Middle School.

“What truly makes this role meaningful to me is that I live in this community with my family,” Michaels said. “Being a part of the community gives me a personal investment in the success of our students and the school as a whole. I admire the school district’s dedication to fostering an inclusive, safe learning environment, and I’m excited to be part of a place that prioritizes both educational and personal growth.”

Michaels comes to WAPS from Houston High School, where she started her career in education as a special education teacher before becoming the dean of students and assistant principal. In those roles, she worked closely with students, staff and families to create a positive and supportive school culture — work she is eager to continue at the middle school.

“What I love most about being an assistant principal is the opportunity to make an impact on students at such a pivotal stage in their development,” Michaels said. “Middle school is an incredibly important time in a child’s life, and I find it deeply rewarding to be part of helping students navigate this transition.”

Michaels describes her leadership style as collaborative and supportive, and she believes in fostering a positive and inclusive school culture where students feel valued and supported.

“I’m deeply committed to the success of all students,” Michaels said. “I truly believe that when we work together as a school community, we can achieve great things.”
